Kentucky Colleges, Universities, and Schools

A good high school education, followed by a college degree, is essential for career advancement these days. Competition for jobs is fierce and even most manual jobs now require a certification providing skill and experience.

Jobs requiring an associate degree are projected to grow 32 percent over the 2000-10 period; jobs requiring a post-secondary vocational award should grow 24.1 percent (U.S. Department of Labor). Today, college graduates earn an average of 98% more income than non-college-graduates. And the gap is widening. (Source: U.S. Department of Commerce). Bachelor's and master's degrees, combined with experience, provide the best route to success.

In Kentucky, various organizations are looking to build a new economy with new industries, new jobs and higher earning. They know that the only route for this aim to take is through education. The Education Professional Standards Board (ESPB) monitors elementary and secondary education in Kentucky; the Kentucky Council on Post-secondary Education looks to increase college-going and completion in Kentucky. The aim is for 82% of adults to have a high school diploma, GED, or more by 2005 (KCPE).

Spending and success are closely monitored at Kentucky's eight universities. Twenty two percent of adults in Kentucky are currently graduating with a bachelor's degree. There is also community college network offering academic and technical associate degrees; diploma and certificate programs in occupational fields; pre-baccalaureate education; adult, continuing and developmental education; customized training for business and industry; and distance learning. There is also a well-monitored network of private institutions.

Kentucky is famous for its history, its horse-racing and its fried chicken. It may well become famous for its high educational standards and expectations.
