Maine Colleges, Universities, and Schools
If you decide to choose one of
the many fine colleges and universities in Maine, you'll find yourself in a place
that has wonderful things to offer all year 'round. Of course, no description of
life and education in Maine would be complete without mentioning the fact that you
can feast on lobster for breakfast, lunch and supper. The lobster isn't the official
state animal, but it certainly should be. Maine is the largest of the five New England
states. In fact, it is as large as the other four combined. Every part of the state
offers something to enjoy when you take breaks from your university campus in Maine.
If you like wildlife, the woods and rocky coastline of Maine can show you moose,
puffins, whales and much more. There are also some of the best wilderness hiking
and camping areas in the country. Of course, it doesn't all have to be that strenuous.
Maine also welcomes you to relax on its sandy beaches or to pursue history, antiques
and delightful seafood meals in its hundreds of small and charming villages. If you
are attracted by the arts, Maine offers that flavor as well. You'll find works by
such respected American painters as Rockwell Kent and the Wyeth family who lived
and painted in Maine.
A good high school education, followed by a college degree, is essential for career
advancement these days. Competition for jobs is fierce and even most manual jobs
now require a certification providing skill and experience.
Jobs requiring an associate degree are projected to grow 32 percent over the 2000-10
period; jobs requiring a post-secondary vocational award should grow 24.1 percent
(U.S. Department of Labor). Today, college graduates earn an average of 98% more
income than non-college-graduates. And the gap is widening. (Source: U.S. Department
of Commerce). Bachelor's and master's degrees, combined with experience, provide
the best route to success.
If you want to live and study in Maine, you must choose from five hundred municipalities.
This is no easy choice. Leisure activities include sandy beaches, snowboarding, seven
leading art museums and fabulous golf courses. Wherever you choose, the learning
environment is ideal. Maine is famous for its breathtaking coastline, sparkling lakes
and outdoor sports.
Comprehensive information is available on Maine's education provision from kindergarten
through secondary to its universities. There are nineteen applied and technology
school centers in Maine and eight applied regional colleges.
Post-secondary education is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Each of its seven
universities forms the cultural center of their community, with 34,700 students statewide.
There are also two training academies and a wide range of private community colleges
for to choose from, catering for every educational need. Outreach programs build
strong links with the community.
