Massachusetts Colleges, Universities, and Schools

The colleges and universities in Massachusetts enjoy worldwide reputations. The beautiful city of Cambridge is almost like one large campus. Higher education in Massachusetts has been compared to the most famous European institutions of learning and the technical schools in Massachusetts have turned out some of the country's most valuable engineers and scientists. In addition to the high level of education in Massachusetts, the state is also known for its rich culture. The world famous Boston Ballet has survived and thrived through more than 40 years. The Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and the Boston Pops Orchestra both have earned respect around the world. Massachusetts also has numerous features for fans of outdoors activities. If observing sports is your favorite thing, Boston is home to the world champion Red Sox. The more participatory aspects of the outdoors are available along miles of hiking trails, in beautiful parks and preserves, and in camping areas, biking trails and along miles of rugged beaches around the state. History buffs can meander through the many historical monuments marking the significant role the state played in the American Revolution. Massachusetts was the site of many parts of that war - from Paul Revere's well-known ride, to the bloody battle of Bunker Hill.

A good high school education, followed by a college degree, is essential for career advancement these days. Competition for jobs is fierce and even most manual jobs now require a certification providing skill and experience.

Jobs requiring an associate degree are projected to grow 32 percent over the 2000-10 period; jobs requiring a post-secondary vocational award should grow 24.1 percent (U.S. Department of Labor). Today, college graduates earn an average of 98% more income than non-college-graduates. And the gap is widening. (Source: U.S. Department of Commerce). Bachelor's and master's degrees, combined with experience, provide the best route to success.

With a population of over 6,349,097 (2000 census), Massachusetts is widely recognized as one of the most innovative economic regions in the world. It is home to some of the world's finest institutions of higher education, which has generated a tremendous concentration of science and technology related research and development. It boasts excellent elementary schools. This year ninety-four percent of the 72,900 third graders who took the MCAS reading exam this passed, with 64 percent scoring at the top level (MCAS.gov).

An extensive community college system offers career development training and four-year degrees. If you are looking for higher education, its widespread university system provides educational programs, research, and continuing education services in the liberal and creative arts and sciences and in the professions. There is a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate degrees catering for every wish. Wherever you go, there is also a cultural and sports program to match.
